#LibFive: Five Key Foundations for Building Inclusive Libraries
Is there anyone more equipped to meaningfully speak on the concept of inclusive libraries than our students? Of course not. Of course not. To leverage students’ experience, perspective, and wisdom—and to create student-driven PD—three of our amazing 8th grade students--Cesar Falcon, Jose Gomez, and Jaida Morris--at Mount Vernon Middle School worked with me to develop student-led training for librarians. During this session, we'll explain our #LibFive concept and unpack those Five Key Foundations for Building Inclusive Libraries. My students will share their stories and lived library experiences!

Genre it's More than just a Location
In this interactive session, I will present on the how/why and logistics of moving the fiction library collection from Dewey Decimal to Genre. I will cover the process from the first stages of acquiring the genre report from Follett, sorting, labeling and finally to the organization by Genre. Through this presentation, I will show the process of using Destiny to assign copy category and sub-location and discuss the trial by error of the physical process of pulling books and sorting by genre.

Girl Book vs. Boy Book
As the author of "The Miscalculations of Lightning GIRL", Stacy McAnulty had to decide if she wanted 'girl' in the title because it might deter male readers. This INTERACTIVE DISCUSSION session will examine reading habits of children, talk about ways to expand their literacy world, and look at how adults intentionally (or unintentionally) categorize readers and books.

Reaching New Heights with Hi-Lo Readers
The evidence is clear that the reading reading levels of students increase when students read more, and self-selected reading leads to greater motivation. With a NCSLMA Read to Succeed grant, we purchased high interest-low level books and challenged all of our EC students to read 40 books.

Slam...Pow...Wow! Superheroes Real and Imagined
Our students were exposed to real and imaginary superheroes through a study of the creation and reading of graphic novels, both fiction and non-fiction. The art teacher, a fourth grade teacher, and media specialist collaborated on an integrated arts unit. Students read graphic novels featuring superheroes, designed artwork, and met with two local graphic novel authors. They also logged their reading in Biblionasium. Come join us with our journey that took many twists and turns. Link to Google Slides (Copy and paste into a browser) http://bit.ly/2QvwyR7
