Get ready for time-traveling book adventures! Did you know that characters created by Eloise Greenfield paved the way for stories and characters created by Kelly Starling Lyons and Kwame Alexander? Participants will travel back in time over a 30-year span to explore books featuring characters of color from 1988-2018. This workshop session will take participants on a journey to discover the rich heritage of diversity and cultural expression that have evolved in books for children and young adults. Presenters will lead active discussions with guiding questions, such as: How have books featuring children and young adults of color grown over the years? Who are some of the authors and illustrators who were instrumental in developing authentic characters of color in children’s literature? Participants will experience a hands-on exploration of children’s literature featuring individuals of color through a display of the selected books and digital resources that should be part of all school library media collections.
